10 Inexpensive Things To Do During the Last Weeks of Summer!
The summer is winding down, you've had your big summer vacation, and soon it'll be time for back-to-school meetings, and the back-to-work every day grind. The time is trickling away, the kids are getting antsy with the summer blues. You want to grab the last seconds of summer, but you don't have the money for a final hurrah of a summer vacation. Stumped when it comes to ideas to cure the kid's boredom and stretch the summer season as much as possible, all while not breaking the bank in the process?

1. Picnic Together! Gather a blanket, some food from home, the family and hit a sunny, grassy, shady, (but not too shady!) spot to just relax, eat food, and maybe throw a Frisbee around. Take your loved ones to Claude Moore Park, to find gorgeous nature trails, open fields, a fishing pond, and picnic pavilions. There's just something about the great outdoors, fresh air, and food that makes the laughs longer and the memories richer. 
2. See What's In Theatres ...for Much Less! Who says you can't go to a movie early on a Tuesday afternoon? A lot of movie theaters offer matinee prices earlier in the day, so seeing the newest blockbusters won't necessarily leave your wallet empty. Also available this summer is the Regal Cinema's Movie Express where children can go watch a movie in theaters during selected hours for only $1-$3!! You can also check out the various "Movies Under The Stars" options-- many parks and organizations offer a free or very inexpensive PG movie showing at dusk. Bring the kids, a blanket, some food and enjoy!
3. Take a Hike! Strap on your hiking boots, grab the insect repellent and hit Algonkian Park or Great Falls Park for a hike through Mother Nature's splendor. Take pictures and relish the Vitamin D. 
4. Listen to Some Local Live Music Check out Herndon Rocks, your spot for local music from local bands, food, drink, shopping, and community! Spend the night out with family and friends on a lawn with some food to hear the locals jam out. Who knows, a less-than-known group playing could become your next music muse!
5.Visit a Festival or Fair Corn dogs, popcorn, pizza, shaved ice and homemade crafts are calling your name! Round up some friends for a day of amusement and classic Americana atmosphere as you check out the Lucketts Fair (Aug 15-16) and stroll through one of America's oldest traditions. 
6. Go Swimming! Grab your swimsuit, some sunscreen, and make a splash in a Loudoun County pool! Claude Moore, or Volcano Island Waterpark (near Algonkian Park) are great places for the little ones to cool off.
7. Stargaze While Camping A campground, an open field, or even your backyard-- all are great places to pitch a tent with friends and family spend a night out in nature. Check out the Blackburn Trail Center or head a little ways into Maryland to visit the Brunswick Family Campground. Don't forget the s'mores! 
8. Take a Bike Ride Through Your Town Pump up your tires, grab your helmet, gather your crew and hit the W & OD bike trail or tackle the Patomac Heritage National Scenic Trail . Cruise by in the open air and see your town from a different perspective. Hungry? Pack a lunch or make a stop along the way! 
9. Put Up a Lemonade Stand In Your Community Relive those days of your childhood, and help your kids make a little bank too!Get your ingredients, your friends, a moneybox, a table and some chairs and participate in another old American summer tradition. You'd also be surprised at how many new people in your community you meet.
10. Volunteer In Your Community Together! Give where you live! Cost? $0. The experience? Priceless. Volunteering together at your church, your school, the library, or an animal shelter with the family can be a fun and rewarding experience that lasts you long after the summer is gone.
